By now, you have read the introduction information on the home page and completed the response box to let me know that you did so.  If you haven't done this-- do it before starting today's work.

Today's Work:
  1. This week's Warm Read #29:  Apple-Picking by Robert Frost
  2. Review requirements of the research paper.  In your GoogleDocs, make a folder titled LastName_FirstName_Research.  Share the folder with me.  You will eventually turn your paper in through TURNITIN.COM, but while you are working, we will use the folder to hold all applicable parts of the paper.  Go to the GoogleDoc  Research Paper Components. Make a copy of the document and label it LastName_FirstName_RC.  Put it in the folder that you shared with me. We will communicate using the document.  There will be other documents I will upload and you will copy and place into the folder.  It is very important that you name things as I ask so I know what I am looking at.
  3. Complete the Plagiarism Activity.  Look in the Research 2020 folder for the plagiarism activity.  Open it.  Make a copy.  Label it with your LastName_FirstName_Plagiarism.  Place the copy in the folder that you shared with me.
  4. Review the document 2020 Research Paper Topics.  Select a topic and figure out what stories, poems, authors, etc you could use to answer the given prompt/question. When you have selected a topic and figured out what works you will use, post the topic (copy/paste) and works as a comment to this post.  Only one person may do a particular prompt/set of works.  You may have to use the same prompt, but you must use different works. Please don't claim a topic until you feel confident that you know what literary works you want to work with.  If you need help figuring what you want to research, I can help you with ideas.
  5. Support information for completing the research paper can be found under the WRITING tab of the website. We will complete this in a step-by-step way.  Today's work (as listed above) should be done before Tuesday morning at 9:00.  Tuesday's assignment will go up at 9:00 AM.

AP will also have to do some more with stuff with the work- so it needs to be a single one. Look around and think over it before you decide.

13. A recurring theme in literature is the classic war between a passion and responsibility. For instance, a personal cause, a love, a desire for revenge, a determination to redress a wrong, or some other emotion or drive may conflict with moral duty. Choose a literary work in which a character confronts the demands of a private passion that conflicts with his or her responsibilities. In a novel or play, a confidant (male) or a confidante (female) is a character, often a friend or relative of the hero or heroine, whose role is to be present when the hero or heroine needs a sympathetic listener to confide in. Frequently the result is, as Henry James remarked, that the confidant or confidante can be as much “the reader’s friend as the protagonist’s.” However, the author sometimes uses this character for other purposes as well. 44. One of the strongest human drives seems to be a desire for power. Write an essay in which you discuss how a character in a novel or a drama struggles to free himself or herself from the power of others or seeks to gain power over others. Be sure to demonstrate in your essay how the author uses this power struggle to enhance the meaning of the work.

Choose a distinguished novel or play in which some of the most significant events are mental or psychological; for example, awakenings, discoveries, changes in consciousness. In a well-organized essay, describe how the author manages to give these internal events the sense of excitement, suspense, and climax usually associated with external action. Do not merely summarize the plot.

4. An effective literary work does not merely stop or cease; it concludes. In the view of some critics, a work that does not provide the pleasure of significant closure has terminated with an artistic fault. A satisfactory ending is not, however, always conclusive in every sense; significant closure may require the reader to abide with or adjust to ambiguity and uncertainty. In an essay, discuss the ending of a novel or play of acknowledged literary merit. Explain precisely how and why the ending appropriately or inappropriately concludes the work. Do not merely summarize the plot.

1. Choose a character from a novel or play of recognized literary merit and write an essay in which you (a) briefly describe the standards of the fictional society in which the character exists and (b) show how the character is affected by and responds to those standards. In your essay do not merely summarize the plot.

Actually I wanna do this one. 29. In some works of literature, a character who appears briefly, or does not appear at all, is a significant presence. Choose a novel or play of literary merit and write an essay in which you show how such a character functions in the work. You may wish to discuss how the character affects action, theme, or the development of other characters. Avoid plot summary.

12. Choose a complex and important character in a novel or a play of recognized literary merit who might on the basis of the character’s actions alone be considered evil or immoral. In a well-organized essay, explain both how and why the full presentation of the character in the work makes us react more sympathetically than we otherwise might. Avoid plot summary.

I wanted to ask could I do this one instead: "Select a line or so of poetry, or a moment or scene in a novel, epic poem, or play that you find especially memorable. Write an essay in which you identify the line or the passage, explain its relationship to the work in which it is found, and analyze the reasons for its effectiveness."

And am I allowed to use these works:
1: “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus (1849-1887)
2: “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost (1874-1963)

We never read those in class..

You should only use poems if they are epic-length or if you have three that are connected in some way. How are these two connected? Can we add a third? Things are always easier in threes

59. In literary works, cruelty often functions as a crucial motivation or a major social or political factor. Select a novel, play, or epic poem in which acts of cruelty are important to the theme. Then write a well-developed essay analyzing how cruelty functions in the work as a whole and what the cruelty reveals about the perpetrator and/or victim.

The Hunger Games doesn't classify as literary fiction. Dystopia-- what about Fahrenheit 451 or 1984 or Brave New World?

45. Many writers use a country setting to establish values within a work of literature. For example, the country may be a place of virtue and peace or one of primitivism and ignorance. Choose a novel or play in which such a setting plays a significant role. Then write an essay in which you analyze how the country setting functions in the work as a whole.

60. Many works of literature contain a character who intentionally deceives others. The character’s dishonesty may be intended either to help or to hurt. Such a character, for example, may choose to mislead others for personal safety, to spare someone’s feelings, or to carry out a crime. Choose a novel or play in which a character deceives others. Then, in a well-written essay, analyze the motives for that character’s deception and discuss how the deception contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole

Ignore the half-naked men on the front of the books.  These actually were some quick, funny reads.  And I have a point.  READ.... it doesn't matter if it an award-winning novel or a trashy romance, JUST READ.  It exercises your brain and gets you outta the house when you can't actually get outta the house.
