I believe in literature.
I believe in the ability of great literature to bring people together. Literature is the great equalizer. It is the single experience which allows every person to realize his or her place in the broader fabric of humanity, how he or she fits into the universe. When people work so hard to see the differences among us, literature speaks to our sameness. Literature traverses- race, creed, religion, nationality– the myriad of separators within our society. Through the study of literature students can see how the triumphs and tragedies of the modern person are not dissimilar from the hopes and heartbreaks experienced since the beginning of the written word. Students should see themselves in the literature they read. Every poem, passage, novel, or essay should serve as a mirror in which students can adjust their views of themselves. Every word should be a magnifying glass with which students examine their own perspectives and experiences. I believe in the power of literature to shape the minds and hearts of students. I believe in the power of literature to change our world. |
